The away trip to Guilsfield is one that off the field
you look forward to each year. It is a straightforward run south
from Buckley down the A483 and always seems to accompanied by sunny
weather for our visit to this small rural village in its picturesque
setting (despite foul foggy weather inbetween).
Year on year in this small club that sits just to the north of
Welshpool in mid Wales seems to develop that little bit more each
year. Since the club was able to make use of the newly built
community facility, they have not rested on their laurels. A small
but keen committee have developed the ground. They have plenty of
room for future development and it does not take much imagination to
picture what this facility could become.
This season has seen the addition, at pitch side, of a portacabin to
provide refreshment facilities. Fencing has been installed at the
far end of the ground to prevent all but the most wayward of shots
on goal from going over. The pitch is still uneven but over the
coming seasons this will level out and if the club adds lights and
more seating it will become one of the best grounds in the Cymru
Alliance.
On the pitch Buckley found Guilsfield a test and both sides had
chances to win the game.
Buckley will especially look at their first half
performance and rue the many clear cut chances that fell to their
forwards. More than once you felt here comes a goal only for the
shot to be blazed over, wide or into the arms of Guilsfield's
keeper. Strikers will be strikers and at times a simple squared pass
to a colleague would have better served the team than taking the
direct shot on goal. Desormeaux, Hughes, Molyneux, Quirk and Wynne
were all as guilty as one another. You can't blame them though as
all have found the back of the net in recent weeks and the side
continues to make chance after chance in a fairly healthy unbeaten
run.
The cost of those misses was that the opposition took the lead. A
bobbling pass back wide of the goal gave keeper Jamie Hulse problems
with his clearance. It cannoned off an opponent and allowed
Guilsfield to square the ball across the box to the centre forward
position and a simple Ross Frame tap in. A set back but you still
felt it was only a matter of time before Buckley scored.
Twenty minutes passed in which both sides had more chances to score.
Buckley changed to 4-3-3 with Quirk playing more centrally and
Molyneux and Wynne either side. Hughes, Desormeaux and Darlington
were all prominent as Buckley strived for an equaliser. They clearly
began to get on top in terms of possession.
Buckley worked the ball well and Phil Molyneaux managed to lay the
ball off near the edge of the box for the oncoming Mark Orme to get
a strike in on goal. They continued to press and on 34 minutes
gained their reward.
Again the ball was worked forward to Molyneux and his headed flick
on in central midfield fell kindly at the feet of Neil Wynne. Back
to goal he shielded from the two defenders that closed him down and
then laid the ball to his right, through the legs of a central
defender, for John Leonard breaking forward from midfield. Leonards
momentum carried him forward leaving former Buck Mike Sawtell for
dead. He calmly slotted past Mike Barton from 11 yards for 1-1.
Leonard created a further chance not much later on but Neil Wynne
could not finish it. Mark Orme from a long throw and David Hughes
from a Rees Darlington cross both forced Barton into further saves.
Darlington also had a long strike on goal, as the ball fell to him
on the edge of the box but the sides went in level at the break.
The second half did not create as much in the way of clear cut
chances as the first as Buckley went looking for the lead. Sam
Roberts had headed and shooting chances from corners as did Mark
Orme and Joe Desormeaux. In one incident the post was rattled and in
another Barton was forced to turn the ball around the post.
As the game wore on Guilsfield came back into it and had a number of
chances but none bore fruit.
Buckley shuffled their pack with Calder, Hardstaff and Caddick all
coming on and Buckley again pressed for a winner. Mark Orme rose
tall from a set play but could not steer his header down into the
goal.
Guilsfield won a free kick on the edge of the box when Hardstaff
clattered an opponent but the kick bent over the wall and into the
waiting hands of Jamie Hulse.
Try as they might Buckley could not force a winner and the game
ended in a 1-1 draw.
Gareth Thomas will have been happy enough that the unbeaten streak
goes on, especially away from home were no point gained is easy. The
win would have been nice but the lads can still go into Wednesdays
important clash with Lex full of confidence given the number of
chances that his team continues to create. With Llandudno not
playing Buckley can again go third and exert a little pressure on
their rivals for that third spot.
