Buckley Town staged a dramatic late recovery to come
from behind against Penrhyncoch - extending their winning running to
five games and their unbeaten run to 12.
On a cold afternoon two of the Cymru Alliance’s
in-form sides met on a Globe Way pitch dusted with snow for what
proved to be a closely fought game.
It was fair to say that defences came out on top in
the first half with little goalmouth action produced by either side.
Buckley edged the possession and on 20 minutes came close to
breaking the deadlock – the visiting goalkeeper making point-blank
saves from Phil Molyneux and Joey Desormeaux.
Generally the Bucks produced some neat attacking
football but received a warning from the away side when Richard
Evans curled a shot over the bar after a well-worked move.
In the minutes leading up to the break it was the
Bucks central defenders who came closest to scoring. First a Gareth
Edwards header from a corner was tipped over the bar and a minute
later Mark Orme headed over from close-range with the goalkeeper
beaten.
On the stroke of half-time there was a clash between
both sets of players sparked by a deliberate elbow to the face of
Buckley’s Gareth Edwards. A free-kick was eventually awarded by the
referee before Neil Wynne hit a shot over the bar.
Molyneux was sent clean through but Hughes in the
Penrhyncoch goal was out to close him down. It remained 0-0 at the
break with two good teams cancelling each other out.
Once the second-half was under way neither side could
get hold of the game. Buckley manager Gareth Thomas replaced Dean
Hardstaffe with Dave Hughes on 58 minutes in an attempt to gain the
advantage. Three minutes later though it was the away side who took
the lead.
Josh Shaw raced to the by-line and crossed for
Richard Evans to tap home at the far post making it 1-0 to
Penrhyncoch – slightly against the run of play.
The Bucks responded immediately with Molyneux
crossing for Gareth Edwards at the left post but he couldn’t apply
the finish. As Buckley cranked up the pressure a drive from Neil
Wynne went just over.
With 20 minutes to go Penrhyncoch introduced Mathew
Evans in place of Mark Egan. Buckley’s second substitution came with
quarter of an hour remaining – Liam Caddick coming on for Gareth
Edwards. A minute later a Mark Orme header following a free-kick was
held comfortably by the goalkeeper.
Just over 10 minutes remained when Buckley finally
levelled. A Molyneux cross was flicked on by Liam Caddick for Dave
Hughes to drill home on the 6-yard line to make it 1-1. From the
re-start the Bucks won the ball back with Caddick played in down the
left but unfortunately – though his effort was on target – the
goalkeeper was equal to it.
The game became stretched in the closing stages as
both sides went for the win. With 5 minutes to go Penrhyncoch
replaced goalscorer Richard Evans with Steve Jones while Buckley
where unable to profit from a goalmouth scramble as the visiting
defence blocked well.
As the final whistle approached Caddick crossed into
the area for Neil Wynne to connect on the volley. It seemed as
though the goalkeeper might get enough behind it to keep the ball
out but he couldn’t and the Bucks took a late lead at 2-1.
A Bucks substitution saw Colin Quirk give way to Sam
Roberts and captain John Leonard picked up a booking but that was
the last action of the game.
The Bucks continued their fine recent run and
cemented their place up with the league’s front-runners with an
excellent win against a difficult Penrhyncoch side – the reaction
from the players and fans at the end of the game reflected what a
good three points this was.
