Mynydd Isa Football Club
Click button for 5 Day Weather Forecast for Mynydd Isa from BBC Weather: Many people in the village don't believe Mynydd Isa have much of an history concerning football. The earliest evidence of Mynydd Isa playing organised football is way back in 1931 when they entered the Flintshire Amateur League Division Two and playing against the likes of Flint Alex, Shotton Villa, Holywell Celtic, Primrose Hill Athletic, Mold Pentre Athletic, Connah's Quay Amateurs, Ewloe Rangers, Shotton Athletic, Buckley Rovers and Bagillt Rangers to name but a few. In the first season they made quite an impact for a small village and the team line up looked as follows A. Jones, N. Williams, P. Piercy, J. Eagles, M. Bellis, I. Jones, W. Seaman, J. Ellis, E. O. Edwards, H. Jones and W. O. Jones. The team sheet was taken from the game versus Holywell Celtic in which Isa won 5-1. At this time Mynydd Isa were third in the table having played 11, winning 7 losing 3 and with 1 draw. This information is from the County Herald dated 20/11/1931. It is likely
that the home pitch at this time was on the Wylfa Hill Field just past the mile
stone. Other pitches used were opposite the stone cottages in Chambers Lane,
Field Bron, Wylfa Farm, Argoed Small Holdings, Chambers Lane also the Field
Wilcox & Jones Estate, opposite the garden centre. The stripping rooms used were
as follows The Old Shed in Chambers Lane, Old Griffin Inn, Garage and the Welsh
Chapel school room. The first season ended with Mynydd Isa taking second spot in
the league behind Holywell Celtic scoring 125 goals in 34 matches. In the 1932 - 33 season Mynydd Isa started well but for some reason clubs were dropping out of the league like flies and points deducted hit them badly and they finished lowly down the table. Interestingly enough another side in the league that year was Buckley Square United. No side was entered into any competition until the 1936-37 season as the leagues seemed to be quarrelling with each other and teams were resigning as quick as one was joining. The Flintshire Junior League replaced the Division Two. In 1936 Mynydd Isa entered this league and found the going a little tough. The teams to beat were Altami, Castle Juniors and Leeswood Reserves. Isa finished fourth from bottom with Buckley Celtic below them. Again fixtures were still outstanding at the end of the season but Altami were crowned champions.
In the 1938-39 season spirits must have been high after a final appearance the season before and the tables showed a mighty competition taking place with Connah's Quay Albion, Hawarden, Standard Athletic and Mynydd Isa all fighting it out for the title. This was to be a season of cups for Isa and a fine show in the league. Mynydd Isa reached the League Cup final against Leeswood and the Challenge Cup final against Connah's Quay Albion. The League Honours board for that season read as follows:
THE COUNTY HERALD Friday May 12th 1939 MYNYDD ISA`S DUEL TRIUMPH Flintshire Leagues concluded a very interesting and successful season on Saturday. Mynydd Isa playing on the Buckley Town ground, secured the League Cup by a 3-2 victory over Leeswood in the final. Naturally Mynydd Isa were delighted with this second trophy which will keep the Challenge Cup company. Leeswood put up a good struggle, but nevertheless the winners fully merited their success. The table looked like this 1938-39:
The next season saw the out break of war and Mynydd Isa never entered a side. It appears that Mynydd Isa did not compete again until they joined the Welsh National League in the 70`s. In the 1978-79
season Mynydd Isa entered the Welsh National League Division 4 and finished with
a respectable 5th. The following season they finished runners up and gained
promotion. Steady improvement over the years saw finishes of 12th, 10th, 6th,
7th, and in the season 1984-85 they finished runners up and gained promotion
into Division One as this was the year the Premiership was formed. This division seemed to have been a league to far for the club and they struggled for quite some time in the first season ending third from bottom. This was followed by finishing bottom the year after. In 1987-88 they finished a brighter 11th, only to drop to fourth from bottom the next season. A mini revival saw Isa climb to 9th in the 1989-90 season. Then followed the blackest years in the clubs history. From the 1990 season through to 1995 results were dreadful. 2nd from bottom, 2nd Bottom, Bottom, Bottom, and Bottom again resulting in relegation to Division 2.
